KOPER, SLOVENIA. Families and supporters of Port of Koper employees who had blocked the entrance to the port for three days staged a peaceful protest at the port’s entrance gates on Sunday (the traditional family day in Slovenia). Around 1,000 employees blockaded the port on Friday morning - before the General meeting of the Port of Koper (Luka Koper) at which the government-controlled Slovenian Sovereign Holding (SDH), the Port of Koper’s majority shareholder, revoked its request for replacement of three of the Port of Koper’s Supervisory board members. The request had been a point of contention because the Port of Koper has a two-tiered board composed of a Supervisory Board and a Management Board. Supervisory Board members have the power to elect or fire members of the Management Board.

Despite the withdrawal of the request, the workers continued to blockade the port due to the three rejected requests from the Workers' Assembly, and primarily due to the emergence of a document, in which the Minister of Infrastructure, Mr. Peter Gašperšič, detailed amendments to the port’s Concession contract which would radically change the organization and management of the port. Under this plan, the port would be divided into concession zones and a new, dedicated port management would be introduced. These changes would completely alter the Port of Koper’s successful business model, which has led to the Port of Koper’s superb business results.

Gathered outside the port’s entrance gates, the peaceful protestors were addressed by many people, including the Chair of the Works Council, Mr. Mirsko Slosar, Employees’ representative in the Supervisory Board, Mr. Mladen Jovičić, Mr. Drago Mislej - Mef and Mr. Darko Nikolovski. The VZMD President, Mr. Kristjan Verbič, also spoke to the demonstrators and stressed it was of utmost importance to stabilize the situation in Port of Koper and to restore operations to the sole Slovenian port, a goal which unfortunately is not mentioned by some of the highest government representatives in their public statements - Chairman of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia, Mr. Milan Brglez, and Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Mr. Miro Cerar. After Friday's developments both of these government representatives resorted to harsher rhetoric, further worsening the prospects for a constructive solution to the situation.

Mr. Verbič in his brief address further stressed that “this is no time for harsh rhetoric and “whining”, but for adequate solutions which may lead to normality in Port of Koper, in the Primorska region and in Slovenia.” In so doing, he expressed his satisfaction with the decision of employees to temporarily return to work between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. with which they, in his own words, explicitly demonstrated that “if there is no wisdom from those from which we expect it, it is fortunate that you, the employees, have the much needed sobriety and try to bring the situation under control and opt for a serious and constructive dialog anew...”
